About Us Academy press began actual commercial printing in December 1965 with a four-unit Web-offset press. The first publication from Academy press was the Magazine called Flamingo. Mr. David Yellop who was in charge of the magazine was among the first people to show confidence in the ability of Academy Press. David Yellop became Director of Academy Press in 1978. Academy Press Limited had intended to begin Printing with Drum, the largest selling Magazine in Nigeria at that time. The Manager of Drum Magazine failed to bring their Publication for printing, thereby giving the first place to Flamingo. Another early magazine which Academy Press printed was ATOKA, one of the first Yoruba Language periodical ATOKA was published by West African Book Publishers Limited another EDCON group company. In the early days, many potential customers had their headquarters overseas and were accustomed to meeting their printing needs in Europe. They did not believe a Nigerian Printing company could do a job as good as those done in Europe. Fortunately, the Nigeria civil war placed restrictions on imported finished products to the country. During this period, many who would have look abroad for their Printing needs came to appreciate the good quality work Academy Press was doing. The change of heart was also aided by Mr. David Yellop's persuasive selling as he visited potential customers in the United Kingdom and Educated them on the wisdom of printing with Academy Press and indeed in Nigeria |
