THE EARLY DAYS AND DIRECTORS
The dream to found a first rate printing plant as part of a complete graphic arts complex in Nigeria was jointly shared by Richard Gamble, Alade Idris Animashaun and Ian David Pritchard. They were later joined by David R. Yellop. Other early investors in this dream include Chief Olu Akinkugbe and Professor Akin Mabogunje. Together, they had a common objective which could produce educational, entertainment and commercial materials locally for Nigerian print consumers. That culminated in the birth of Academy Press in 1965.
In addition to these gentlemen are other Directors who have over the years contributed immensely to the growth of Academy Press. Among them are Messrs. L. Duval, S. A. Odeneye and T. Olu Ajibade.
 Other companies have since been established by the founders to further explore the opportunities in graphic arts business. They are West African Book Publishers Limited (Publishing), Lithotec Limited (Origination), Academy Press Business Forms Limited and Academy Computers Limited. There is also Richware Ceramic Industries Limited which manufactures ceramic products from mainly local materials. 
In the early days, the priority of Academy Press was to print books and magazines, therefore initial machinery investment was geared towards that objective. Indeed, at the opening ceremony in December 1965, the then popular magazine – Flamingo rolled from Academy’s first printing machine, the four-unit web offset press.
